Raising a Toddler | M’s first purchase

A new blog to our raising a toddler series.

I’ve always had a desire to teach Matthew about the necessities in life, like money. As we were out on a play date, we stumbled into Panera Bread to see what was on the menu, upon standing at the cash register M shouts, “Bananas!”.

That’s when I thought, this is the perfect time to teach him about money. I pulled a dollar out of my purse and handed my little blonde-blue-eyed two year old my dollar bill. We walked up to the register and I told the cashier that my son would like to buy a banana. I sat Matthew on the counter so he could make his very first purchase. He paid for his banana, got his receipt, and the friendly cashier directed him to the large banana bowl so he could choose any banana he wanted. He chose his banana and was SO excited to show me his receipt, his change (a penny), and his banana.
